In a world full of distractions, mind what matters

In a world full of distractions Mind What Matters

For years, I’ve used an expression “Mind over matter…if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

It has gotten me through physical and mental challenges. Helped me push past pain, struggle, and a desire to quit.

While it is true that our brains are powerful and can often overcome our perceived limitations, there’s another part of the equation to remember.

Mind what matters.

If everything matters equally, it means nothing really matters to us at all. We must be selective where we focus our mental energy. If we do not, we run the risk of allowing the latest distraction to divert that energy and leave us scattered.

Consider your top priorities and related non-negotiables.

Priorities are what’s important to you. This might be time with your family, finishing your degree, or upskilling yourself at work.

Non-negotiables are related time commitments, supporting your priority. This could be getting home for dinner 4x a week or spending 2 hours a night studying.

No matter your priorities, keep them top of mind when the world interferes.

When other demands start encroaching on your non-negotiables, say no. As you find yourself distracted, ask yourself if this is moving your priorities forward. If not, that’s a hard pass.

As you start the new year, it’s a great opportunity to keep yourself focused and mind what matters.
