Why we need to know what environments accentuate our gifts

Anything good can happen by accident.  To repeat takes intention.  So how do we make good things happen with intention?  By knowing what contributed to making that good thing happen.  The environment, the players, etc.

Seneca said “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.”   That’s possible when we know the environment or situation that results in positive outcomes.  They are the signals that tell us to jump on that offer or turn left instead of right.

When it was time to get new photos taken, there was a plan.  Until I got there and saw this stairwell.  Whatever else we had planned, the stairs would now be a part of it.  Seeming happenstance became intention when I recognized the opportunity.  Knowing myself, what works best for my coloring, and color theory was preparation.  Add in an amazing photographer and my headshot was born.

The same is true at work.  I know the kinds of environments I thrive in, and those I don’t.  What kinds of projects get me in the flow and those that drain me to the point of exhaustion.

When we know ourselves, our gifts, and the situations or environments that bring them to life, we can consistently deliver amazing results.  We can also know when it’s time to move on, because the environment doesn’t contribute to delivering our best.

Not sure what kind of environment fits you best? Think back to times when you felt the best in a role. Where you got into the flow or were the most energized.  What do they have in common?

Maybe you haven’t experienced that kind of environment.  Then consider those where you felt the most drained or demotivated.  What do they have in common?  Now you have a list of what to avoid.

What would make you jump at an opportunity?  How would you know it’s a great fit for you and your gifts?
